The tax-exile rock stars had all come home by the time Weller made any serious money.

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
When he was in the jam and tax was high they were just starting out. I doubt he earned as much money then as he does now.. You argue that Weller profited from the then Tory govts taxation policy. And has done ever. Since.

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
For a chunk of the time hecwas in The Jam it was high. Its a moot point though because if he was not prepared to pay tax hr would have found a way to avoid or evade.

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
Really. It was thatcher that brought the tax down. The previous labour govt had it high. I left school in 79. The jam split in 82. By then tax had dropped.

Hayzer in Thatchers early years tax was at 50p in the pound i seem to recall.....didnt see Weller going anywhere.

Confirms my worst fears, the Labour party aren't even the Titanic, the Titanic had a good band.
Sad 70s hasbeen trys desperately to make himself relevant again, and Weller isent much better

Ha... good ol' Alspeed...

Yeah Seagull, Jon Street, Charlie Nealle, Murch and Rick Buckley we all looked up to as we were the younger lot in Southend... tough lads they were... didn't John end up in the French Foreign Legion??

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
I was a bit too young for them. Them and Crowley were really good mates of my Mrs in those days. I knocked around with Ed Piller.
Loved the jam saw em loads here and abroad. When they split that was it for me. Moved to Canvey in 83. Still had a Lammy from alspeed. I was good mates of Chad fredricks so knew all the Southend lot, seagull Jonny street etc.
My Fav band was the small hours. I used to get the 58 bus when I was 15 to the bridgehouse.

Weller's first 2 solo albums are the best. Went down down hill after that.

Stanley Road is a superb album as well

Hayzer.... who was your fav band out of the 70's revival ?? Was you in with the Glory Boys?? Hoxton Tom and Grant F etc ?

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
Ken he bores the shit out of me. After following the jam all over its not the same. Seen him once in some forest in Surry a couple of years back. The only excitement was Daltry coming on.

Pikey Geof.. The irony is if Corbyn gets in Wellers tax will go through the roof and he'll fck off abroad like they did in the 70s to avoid paying it, leaving all us dumb shmucks with the bill.

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
Dump, I'm not privvy to how Weller - or any other left wing "celebrity" - spends his money. He may donate a lot to causes he supports, he may not. It's just funny how this sort of stuff RILES people so. (There's a lot more to one's personal politics than "what's the top rate of tax" anyway.)

He's at least being upfront in this case: I assume any profits will go to Corbyn's campaigning. So, now you know.

Personally, I'd prefer if WHU income wasn't donated to the Tories. But the world isn't perfect.

"irony is if Corbyn got in Weller would be taxed to fck, unless he keeps it offshore of course."

Why is that "ironic"? Not everyone relatively wealthy believes in low taxes for the rich, ie "themselves."

If Weller believes Corbyn deserves money he can generate, it's up to him isn't it? If anyone doesn't want to go, they can go to another of one of his shows: a "Concert for Paul Weller."

I think the Changing Man riff was originally borrowed by Jeff Lynne from Dear Prudence?

Re: Dec 16 - Paul Weller to play " Concert for Corbyn "
He does love a stolen riff and bassline, until recently I hadn't listened to The Jam properly in probably 30 odd years, I now realise just how much he'd purloined in those early years, to think he had the neck to confront the pistols' ripping off of 'In the City' for 'Holiday in the Sun'.
